Joe Foley has been working as a Cinematographer for over two decades, shooting feature films, commercials, television, documentaries and music videos. His work has taken him across the world from Paris and London to Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Morocco, Cuba and Ghana.
He has shot over 15 feature films including two were featured in American Cinematographer. Dogs: The Rise and Fall of an All-Girl-Bookie Joint was the only American feature at Rotterdam the year it was released and Killing Time was in competition at Sundance. The last two features that he completed, The Understudy (Assiv Mandvi, Richard Kind, Marin Ireland, Reikio Aylesworth) and Brief Reunion (Joel de la Fuente, Alexi Gilmore, Francie Swift) have just finished theatrical runs in New York and Los Angeles. The Understudy is now playing on Showtime and Brief Reunion is available on iTunes and Netflix.
Joe has shot music videos and concert films with Leonard Cohen and U2, Dinosaur Jr, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The National, M Ward, the Fiery Furnaces, Hospitality and Jennifer Hudson.
Joe’s work in Africa includes shooting and producing 6 award winning Ghanaian music videos and a reality television show in West Africa called The Spirited Actor which is premiering on BET Africa in the Spring of 2013.
Joe’s documentary work includes the award winning political films, Anytown, USA, The Blood In This Town and Hush: The Minnesota First & the Battle of Gettysburg.
He received his BFA in Film from New York University and an MFA in Film from Columbia University. He has taught filmmaking and cinematography at NYU Singapore-Tisch Asia, Barnard College, The School of Visual Arts, Hunter College, The New School and University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
